Curtis Firestone always prioritized his family’s well-being, especially his two athletic sons. But their struggle to breathe during sports—amid wildfire smoke, lingering COVID-19 mask effects, and poor indoor air quality—became a wake-up call. Was this really the best we could do? With a background in sustainability, Curtis envisioned a new air filtration solution—one that would protect his family while creating a healthier, more sustainable world.

Mike Malloy
Mike Malloy, a veteran in air filtration, had seen firsthand the waste and inefficiencies of traditional filters. His turning point came in 2012 after learning about a coal plant closure in Chicago’s Little Village, where pollution had caused severe respiratory issues. The link between fossil fuel pollution and health inequities drove his commitment to a sustainable solution. In 2023, he met Curtis, and their shared vision for cleaner air and environmental responsibility became the foundation of Aerterra.
Starting Aerterra wasn’t easy
Mike and I were determined to challenge an industry resistant to change, combining my sustainability expertise with his deep industry knowledge. We developed biodegradable air filters made from renewable materials, offering the same high performance as traditional filters while significantly reducing landfill waste. Our mission was clear—cleaner air without compromising the planet.
